Homemade Instant Oatmeal “Packets”

Love instant oatmeal but not the ingredients in the store-bought stuff?

Thankfully, you can make them yourself at home! These breakfast cups are not only quick and easy to prepare, but they also offer a healthy alternative to store-bought packets.

By making your own oatmeal cups, you have full control over the ingredients and can avoid any questionable additives.

Let’s get started!

Step 1: Turn Rolled Oats Into Instant Oats

We only purchase and store whole rolled oats as they provide the best texture and versatility for most recipes.

So, for us, the first step is to turn these whole rolled oats into instant oats. This can be done by running them through a food processor.

(Instant oats are simply whole rolled oats that have been processed into a finer grain.)

For this recipe, you’ll need five cups of oats, which will yield around 7 to 8 cups of the final product.

Since processing all five cups at once can overwhelm a standard food processor, it’s best to divide it into two batches of two cups and three cups.

This ensures that the oats are processed evenly and to the desired consistency.

Step 2: Create the Base Mix

Now that you have your instant oats ready, it’s time to create the base mix for your oatmeal cups.

In a large bowl, combine one cup of coconut sugar, one teaspoon of salt, and half a cup of milk powder.

Feel free to use any type of sugar you prefer or omit it altogether if you prefer to sweeten your oatmeal cups with maple syrup or honey when serving.

Mix all the ingredients together, breaking up any clumps of coconut sugar. It’s normal to have some clumps, but they’ll dissolve when cooked.

The base mix is now ready to be divided into individual jars & transformed into various flavors!

Step 3: Prep Your Oatmeal Cups

Grab seven pint-sized jars and add one cup of the base mix into each jar. This will give you single-serving portions for easy grab-and-go breakfasts.

If you prefer, you can transfer the entire base mix to a larger container instead of individual jars.

However, having the jars ready makes it more convenient, especially if you have kids who enjoy cooking their own breakfast on weekends.

Step 4: Flavor Your Oatmeal Cups

This is where the fun part begins. Today, we’ll be making three different flavors:

Blueberries and Cream

For the blueberries and cream variation, you’ll need dehydrated blueberries. (You could also use blueberry powder.) If you have freeze-dried fruit, that works even better as it hydrates almost instantly.

Add a 1/4 cup of dehydrated blueberries to your jars of the base mix. (We chose to only make two jars with this flavor.)

To give it a creamy taste, add 1/4 cup of vanilla protein powder.

Mix everything together, and you’re done!

Acai Cranberry

For the acai cranberry flavor, you’ll need acai powder and dried cranberries. Add slightly less than 1/4 cup to each jar that you want to flavor this way. Then, add 1/4 cup of dried cranberries for that tangy cranberry flavor.

You may want to sweeten this flavor with maple syrup or honey when preparing because the acai can make it rather tart.

Pumpkin Vanilla

Lastly, we have the pumpkin vanilla flavor. To achieve this delicious combination, add 1/4 cup of vanilla protein powder and one teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice to your jars with the base mix.

For the star ingredient, add 1/4 cup of homemade pumpkin powder. When cooking this flavor, you may want to add some maple syrup when cooking to balance out the strong pumpkin flavor.

How to Cook Homemade Instant Oatmeal

When it’s time to enjoy your oatmeal cups, there are a few different ways to cook them.

If you have a microwave, simply transfer the contents of one jar into a microwave-safe bowl and add about 1.5 cups of water. You can also use milk or almond milk for added creaminess. Microwave for 2:30 minutes.

If you prefer stovetop cooking, pour the contents of one jar into a pot and add about 1.5 cups of water, milk, or milk alternative.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn off the heat and cover with a lid. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, and enjoy!

If you prefer using whole rolled oats instead of instant oats, the cooking time will be longer, usually around 7 to 10 minutes.

And there you have it—homemade instant oatmeal cups that are not only quick and easy to make but also customizable to your family’s tastes.

With flavors like blueberries and cream, acai cranberry, and pumpkin vanilla, you’ll never get bored of breakfast again!

  1. I’d like to make several jars of the instant oatmeal for long term storage (either in mason jars or Mylar bags with O2 absorbers). What would the shelf lives be?
