Did you know it’s recommended to NOT store your canning jars with the rings on them?
The ring can potentially “hide” a false seal because it continues to hold the lid in place—even if it’s lost its vacuum seal.
This presents quite the conundrum for home canners … so. many. rings.
What do we do with all those rings?!
Creative Ways to Store Your Canning Rings
We just need to get a little creative!
Here are some ideas to keep your rings organized and easily accessible:
1. Bungee Cords
One unique way to store your canning rings is to use bungee cords. Find something you can hook both sides of the bungee cord to, then slide your rings onto the cords.
This is a great option if you have limited storage space, as it allows you to hang your rings in otherwise unusable space.
Here’s a picture of my setup:

2. Coat Hangers
Another option is to use wire coat hangers to store your canning rings. You’ll need wire cutters to snip near the top of the hanger, then slide the rings onto it.
Once all the rings are on, secure them by wrapping the snipped wire around the opposite wire that wasn’t snipped.

This is a great option if you have a lot of rings to store as it allows you to store them out of sight in a closet.
3. Countertop Paper Towel Holder
If you’re looking for a more decorative storage solution, consider using a countertop paper towel holder to store your canning rings.
Simply slide the rings onto the holder, then place the holder on your countertop or shelf.

4. Rubbermaid Bins
For a more traditional storage option, consider using Rubbermaid bins to store your canning rings. This is a great option if you have a lot of rings to store, as it allows you to stack the bins on top of each other.
If you use a transparent one, you can easily see how many rings you have.

5. A Burlap Bag (Or Other Breathable Material)
If you’re looking for a more rustic storage option, consider using a burlap bag or other breathable material to store your canning rings.

Just toss the rings into the bag, and tie the bag closed. To save space, tie a string around the top, and hang on a hook somewhere out of the way.
6. An Old Comforter Bag
If you have an old comforter bag lying around, consider using it to store your canning rings.
This is actually a great option to store all sorts of canning supplies in one convenient place. Many comforter bags are transparent, so you can quickly see what’s in it.

7. Stackable Milk Crates
Finally, consider using stackable milk crates to store your canning rings. Stacking is a wonderful way to save space by taking advantage of “empty” vertical space.

Choosing the Right Storage Space
When it comes to storing canning rings, you want to keep them in a dry location because they are prone to rust. Here are some location ideas:
Kitchen Cabinet
If you have a spacious kitchen cabinet, it can be a great place to store your canning rings. Just make sure the cabinet is dry and clean.
Avoid using the cabinets that are above your stove because the steam from cooking can create a high-moisture environment.
Pantry
If you have a pantry, it can be a convenient place to store your canning rings. Just make sure the pantry is dry and cool, and that the rings are not exposed to any moisture.
Basement or Cellar
As long as your basement or cellar doesn’t stay damp, it can be a good place to store your canning rings. You may want to consider storing them in a plastic container to keep them protected.
If you struggle with moisture in such areas, try a dehumidifier option such as Damp Rid:

Closet
I love storing my rings out of sight. (Who else hates visual clutter?) 🙋♀️
Since closets already have racks built in, the bungee cord idea is an excellent option for storing your canning rings in closets.
Tips for Keeping Your Canning Rings Clean & Rust-Free in Storage
To keep your canning rings clean, make sure to wash them thoroughly before storing them. You can use warm soapy water or run them through the dishwasher.
Make sure to dry them completely before storing them to prevent any moisture from accumulating and causing rust.
It’s also a good idea to keep your storage area clean and dust-free. Wipe down shelves and containers before storing your rings to prevent any dust or dirt from settling on them.
Rust can be a common problem when storing canning rings. To prevent rust from forming, you can add a silica gel packet to your storage container to absorb any excess moisture.
If you notice rust forming on your rings, you can try removing it with a mixture of vinegar and baking soda or a rust remover solution.
However, I’m typically overrun with canning rings as it is, so rusty ones just get tossed in the trash around here.
Keeping your canning rings clean and rust-free in storage is important for ensuring you have rings at the ready when you need them for your next canning project!
