5 Ways to Increase the Sweetness of Your Strawberry Plants

Growing strawberries is rewarding, but getting them to reach their peak sweetness takes more than just basic care.

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, these proven techniques can help you grow strawberries that taste like they came straight from a gourmet market!

1. Time Your Watering Right

It might seem strange, but cut back on watering about 7-10 days before harvesting. While strawberry plants need consistent moisture as they grow, reducing water before harvest helps concentrate the sugars in the fruit.

Don’t let the plants wilt—just decrease watering slightly.

Water deeply in the morning rather than with frequent light sprinklings, and try to keep the leaves dry to prevent disease.

2. Give Them Full Sun

Strawberries need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily to produce the sweetest fruit. The sunlight helps plants photosynthesize effectively, converting energy into natural sugars.

If growing in containers, move them to maximize sun exposure. In garden beds, trim back nearby plants that might cast shadows on your strawberry patch.

3. Perfect Your Soil Mix

Create the ideal growing environment with well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.8).

Add organic matter like compost before planting, and supplement with potassium and phosphorus during the growing season.

These nutrients specifically help with fruit development and sugar production. Avoid excess nitrogen, which can lead to lots of leaves but less sweet fruit.

4. Pick at Peak Ripeness

Harvest strawberries when they’re fully red and slightly soft to the touch. Unlike some fruits, strawberries don’t continue to ripen after picking.

Wait until they’re completely ripe—even an extra day on the plant can make a difference in sweetness!

Pick during the coolest part of the day, either early morning or evening, for the best flavor.

5. Choose Sweet Varieties

Start with naturally sweet strawberry varieties. ‘Earliglow’ and ‘Seascape’ are known for their exceptional sweetness.

‘Honeoye’ produces very sweet berries in early summer, while ‘Jewel’ offers excellent flavor in mid-season.

But be sure to research which varieties grow best in your climate zone for optimal results.

Remember that healthy plants produce sweeter fruit, so maintain good garden hygiene by removing dead leaves and keeping the area weed-free.

Speaking of weeds, growing vertically makes weeds practically non-existent. Here are some adorable strawberry planter ideas to inspire you!
