Crock Pot Chicken and Dumplings

Fewer comfort foods are as soothing as chicken and dumplings. The convenience of the Crock Pot makes it even better.

We use biscuits as the dumplings. All you have to do is tear them into pieces to form “dumplings.”

Tips for Making Chicken and Dumplings in Your Slow Cooker

To make this recipe even easier, use a can of biscuits for your dumplings. Simply break them apart, and add to the Crock Pot 1 hour before you’re ready to eat.

This is a recipe I love using dehydrated goods in because the long, slow cooking in liquid helps them rehydrate well—and you save time on veggie chopping.

Also, dark meat seems to work better in this recipe than white meat, so opt for legs and thighs over chicken breasts. Before adding your biscuits or dumplings, just scoop out the chicken, de-bone, then mix the meat back in.

These chicken and dumplings slow cook “hands off” in your Crock Pot. Just add pieces of biscuits an hour before serving!

  • Total Time: 6 hours 5 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 chicken leg quarters (or 2 chicken breasts)
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • 1 can cream of celery soup
  • 1 quart chicken broth
  • 3 whole carrots, sliced (or 1 cup dehydrated carrots)
  • 1 can sweet peas, drained (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons parsley
  • 1 can of biscuits (or 10 uncooked, homemade biscuits)

Instructions

  1. To your slow cooker, place the chicken in first, then add all remaining ingredients except the biscuits.
  2. Cook on LOW for 6 hours.
  3. Remove the chicken, debone if needed, shred, and add back to the pot.
  4. Use your fingers to tear the biscuits into 1-inch pieces (roughly), and place the “dumplings” into the pot.
  5. With a spoon, lightly press down on the biscuit pieces so that they get covered in the liquid. The biscuit pieces should remain at the surface. In other words, do not mix them with all of the other ingredients yet.
  6. Continue to cook on LOW for an additional hour.
  7. Before serving, mix all of the ingredients together, breaking up & mixing in the biscuit pieces.
  8. Enjoy!

Notes

The biscuits should be raw. You do not pre-cook them.
