Easy Potato Dinner Rolls | Pantry Mix

Today, we’re sharing one of our favorite make-ahead pantry mixes that’s perfect for busy families, Sunday suppers, or when you just want something warm and buttery to go with dinner.

We’re talking fluffy, homemade potato dinner rolls—meal prepped in mason jars using shelf-stable ingredients.

These rolls are based on a family favorite that usually calls for mashed potatoes. But since we’re turning this into a dry mix for pantry storage, we’re using instant potato flakes instead.

There’s a slight difference in texture, but we promise—these are still soft, buttery, and downright delicious.

Why We Love Pantry Mixes in Jars

We know how hectic weeknights can get. That’s why we’re big fans of prepping dry mixes ahead of time.

Having your baking staples already measured and ready to go saves you time, reduces mess, and makes it more likely you’ll actually make homemade rolls (instead of pulling something from the freezer section).

These jarred dinner roll mixes are perfect to stash in your pantry and use within 6 months.

What You’ll Need (Per Jar Mix)

Each jar makes about 12 fluffy dinner rolls.

Here’s what to layer in a quart-size mason jar:

  • 1 tsp salt (goes in first to keep it separate from the yeast)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 3 Tbsp powdered buttermilk (or powdered milk if that’s what you have)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (bread flour works too)
  • 1/3 cup instant potato flakes
  • 2¼ tsp instant dry yeast (goes on top to stay away from salt/sugar)

🔔 Pro Tip: We love using powdered buttermilk in baked goods—it adds such a rich, tangy flavor you just can’t get from regular milk powder.

We like to prep 4–6 jars at a time since the ingredients are already out. Label your jars and store them in a cool, dry place.

How to Bake the Rolls

When you’re ready to bake, here’s how to bring those jars to life:

Add the Wet Ingredients:

  • 1¼ cups warm water
  • 1 egg
  • 3 Tbsp butter (cold is fine—no need to soften)

Directions (Using a Bread Machine):

  1. Add water, egg, and butter to the machine first.
  2. Dump the jar mix in on top. No mixing needed.
  3. Run the “dough” cycle (ours is Program #6).
  4. Once the cycle is done, remove the dough and take out any paddles that might be hiding inside.

Shaping & Baking:

  • Lightly flour your surface and divide dough into 12 equal(ish) pieces.
  • Roll into balls and place in a buttered 9×13 baking dish.
  • Let rise in a warm spot (we use the oven with the light on) until doubled—about 1 hour.
  • Bake at 375°F for 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Rub tops with butter while warm (because … butter).
  • Serve hot and enjoy!

Soft, fluffy, golden on top—and with that subtle potato richness that makes them extra comforting. This is the kind of recipe your kids will ask for on repeat.

And once you have the jars prepped, it’s so simple to make them happen, even on a busy weeknight.

    1. Yes, definitely! 🙂 Knead for 5ish minutes, then let it rise until roughly doubled in size, then cut and shape your rolls.
