tater tot casserole

Southern Tater Tot Casserole

Tater Tot Casserole is a filling and satisfying meal that can feed a crowd without breaking the bank. It’s perfect for serving at gatherings, potlucks, or any occasion where you need to feed a large group of people.

  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 7 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter option)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.75 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 bag (32 ounces) frozen tater tots
  • Optional toppings: chopped green onions, crispy bacon bits, sour cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the cooked beef. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the onion is softened and translucent.
  4. Stir in the condensed cream of mushroom soup, frozen mixed vegetables, Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix until well combined and heated through.
  5. Transfer the beef and vegetable mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  6. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the beef mixture, creating an even layer.
  7. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the cheese, covering the entire surface of the casserole.
  8. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy, and the casserole is bubbly around the edges.
  9. Once baked, remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Garnish with optional toppings such as chopped green onions, crispy bacon bits, and a dollop of sour cream, if desired.
  11. Serve hot!

Notes

Get creative with toppings! While the recipe suggests garnishing with chopped green onions, crispy bacon bits, or sour cream, you can also try other toppings like diced tomatoes, avocado slices, or a drizzle of hot sauce for an extra kick.
